Hi,

I've just bought an Epson Stylus Photo 890 after doing a little research and reading that it was well supportrd under Linux. I seem to be having trouble configuring it though.

I've installed cups & gimp-print-cups (4.2.0) and through the CUPS web config tool I've added the printer.

What I can do:
print from OpenOffice

What I can't do:
print from any KDE apps
print images from Gimp (they just come out with a whole load of text)

KDE doesn't give me the opportunity to use CUPS in it's printer config tool although it sees my print queue. And I would really like to know why the Gimp is not converting the imput image to a graphical print job too.

Does anyone have any advice they could give.

Many thanks in advance.

when you compiled kde did you have cups in your USE variable? If not then i think you have to recompile at leat some of the packages, I'd try recompiling kdelibs and kdebase and see what happens or maybe someone else knows more than me.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't put cups into the USE options.. Damn. I'm really not keen on recompiling kde - that sounds like it's gonna' cause problems as I have some kde2 & 3 stuff instlled. Last time I upgraded part of KDE (as part of emerge update world) things brke quite badly - all the icons dissapeared etc. I had to do a complete reinstall.

BTW, I have images printing under the Gimp now. The print queue option in gimps printer setup still needs bo told what printer model to use which seems strange as cups (using the gimp-print driver) already knows what printer I have :-\

Thanks again.

Nuts. I'm in much the same boat as you, except I can't even get Open Office to print through CUPS. :x

Hi,

I'm having the same problems with CUPS and
KDE as you, but I don't think that recompilation is the solution.
The default USE settings already include CUPS
( see /etc/make.profile/make.defaults ).
Anyway, did you recompile and did it help?

Actually,
It looks like you almost certain do need to recompile kdelibs.
Have a look at,

http://printing.kde.org/faq/kdeprint.phtml#install_2
