What do you think of my (possible) new avatar? Am I a mean enough moderator to deserve Governor Tarkin?

After having changed my Avatar to something that now really fits, I think the waging finger would perfectly fit for the SiteAdmin

avatars? we don't need no stinking avatars...

(for the record, I think the finger-wag looks stupid -- looks like he's trying to shake a booger off his finger or something)

I say go for it. We all know that A New Hope Tarkin superior to the Phantom Menace-aged Obi-Wan. Just remember that it's ok to evacuate...even if you're sure you're going to win.

Who would want to go without an avatar??? It's the only identifying mark (Visually) that one can have in a forum!!! Personally I have been thinking about changing mine for a while--I'll have to soon. I still like the Obi-Wan because I "recognize" you that way. I guess I'd learn to recognize your new "facelift" soon enough though. Change is fun and good in moderation, if you are itching to change go for it!

Regards,
BonezTheGoon

me, for one.

ok, so?

seriously -- what's the big deal? I don't understand why people get all excited about avatars. I don't mind the ones that are at least moderately humorous (fghellar's, for example) but I just don't get the draw of them, otherwise.

There's one person on these boards (who shall remain nameless) who absolutely had a fit whenever someone else picked "his" avatar. He immediately went out and chose new one after new one until finally he got a custom one that no one else could (or, more accurately, would want to) use. I found this whole charade both highly amusing as well as somewhat confusing...

Then again, I don't drop $200 on the latest sneakers, either, so wtf do I know. ;)

I like the avatars as long as they say something or mean something to me. I really like the Chinpokomon episode of South Park which is why I chose this Cartman, Oha?!?
[img:a44909b886]http://forums.gentoo.org/images/avatars/gallery/Southpark/South_Park_-_Cartman.jpg[/img:a44909b886]
Of course, I'll probably create a custom one at some point.

That's a good point; I still "recognize" a few people by avatars they had a month ago. Hmmm...

I don't suppose anyone noticed when I changed the color of the light saber, though. ;)

I like your current avatar. It probably wouldn't scare as many people. It's bad enough to find out that you didn't set the file permissions correctly and that's why your script isn't running from a Mod with 14-gazillion posts. I think I would have nightmares or get the shakes or something.

I was thinking about making his head shake back and forth a little, too, but the finger took me long enough.

OK, well now I feel a little bad about the booger comment. Not bad enough to retract it, however. :)

By 'booger' are you referring to the apparent change in finger height? I'll see what I can do to fix it...

More people have posted that they liked it than have posted saying it looks like a booger, so I wouldn't give my opinion too much weight. :) What's important is that you like it.

Also, I admit to being somewhat soured on SW after I saw Lucas completely flub SW 1 and at least partially flub SW II, so that may be coloring my perception. At least you didn't try to use Jar Jar as an avatar... :)

That'd be even more cruel than Tarkin. Tristam29 would probably start to vomit or something. ;)

Hmm... I'll come up with a Tarkin 2.0 (with a new anti-booger defense system). Both avatars are growing on me, but Tarkin is more like a fungus, and I don't know if I like that.

Yeah I don't have fancy sneakers either--I'm just visually based in everything I do. I learn best visually, and I recognize people best visually. So for me visualizations are very important. As for "avatars" in most forums I think they are about as useful to me in identifying someone as a snorkel is to a fish, but in the Gentoo forums (which ROCK) I can make my own avatar!!! That then allows me to give other visually oriented people a quick greeting and bit of information about who I am what I like and something to remember me by when they see me in another thread. To me it is purely something functional in the forum, but your point is well taken. You don't NEED an avatar. "Administrator" is generally sufficient for both general character disclosure and also a mnemonic device to remember you by when in another thread.

I like the diversity that people in the Gentoo forums have with their avatars--and I do have "trouble" (if you will) when I see a duplicate avatar. Silly as it may seem I have to remind myself that there are a few people using Han Solo and a few with Gandalf. At any rate, avatars in Gentoo are worthwile if you ask me. I think that making your own custom is nearly a must. I also think that anyone that "steals" a custom avatar is truly a lonely and sad being. Althought your note about a toddler-style temper-tantrum is far from acceptable.

So to put my "money where my mouth is" I am going to make a custom avatar that identifies me a little better than the little graphic I grabbed off the web (simply thought it was funny.)

I have started a new thread here. As I don't want to take this one off topic.

Damn! Well, who said he could be anyone other than Han? Oh well, good movie!! I'll need to take a closer look at the avatar, I generally pride myself as a movie-buff of sorts (mostly movie quotes though), just to see if I can redeem myself (in my own eyes). Anyway, thanks for setting me straight. I wonder if each person using the avatar know that it's from Blade Runner?? hehe

I wouldn't have recognized it if I hadn't just seen the movie in May. It's a little hard to recognize because he's really not on a 'ship' that long in Blade Runner and has the same sort of rough and tumble character in both.
