I'm running Gentoo 1.4 with KDE 3.03. I'm having a little trouble trying to get Xine to use OSS. I set the "USE=" flag in the make.conf file to oss and re-emerged Xine, it was still using arts, I shutdown the arts soundserver but then Xine would crash when I try to load it up. The last thing I did was recomplie Xine again with the arts soundserver shutdown, same result. How do I get Xine to use OSS?

Have you tried starting it with:
Code:
xine -A oss

You can also set this in your xine config file under your homedir.

Congratulations, after 3 weeks of noodling around with Xine, Ogle, and Mplayer to get decent Audio/Video playback you did it. Xine works almost perfectly now but I also want to try and get Ogle running decently. BTW, in order to get OSS to work correctly I have to disable the aRts soundserver first.

You don't have to, you can set arts to timeout after a short interval of idling (I use 3 seconds). So most of the time arts won't hog /dev/dsp.

You can set it in the control center under Sound | Sound Server with the value autosuspend if idle for.

This has been discussed berfore, so you might want to search in the forums.
