Looks to me like it is trying a look-up for a CDDB-Read query (CD-DataBase.) Which would allow your player to display the Artist, Album, and Songs automagically, however if you do not have this feature configured it could be breaking your player. Unfortunately I do not use abcde but this could be a good starting point. Did you try googling?

Do you have write permissions to the directory tree it is writing too? I ran abcde for the first time a about an hour ago and a directory similar to 'abcde.ac0afc0d' was created. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Anything interesting about the partition /home/shared is on? Can you emerge strace if you haven't already and try: Code: | $ strace -emkdir -f abcde |

man abcde wrote: | BACKEND TOOLS
abcde requires the following backend tools to work:
* An Ogg or MP3 Encoder (oggenc, vorbize, lame, gogo,
bladeenc, l3enc, mp3enc)
* An audio CD reading utility (cdparanoia, cdda2wav)
* cd-discid, a CDDB DiscID reading program.
* wget, an HTTP retrieval program.
* (for MP3s) id3, an id3 tagging program.
* (optional) distmp3, a client/server for distributed

What is the output of 'echo $PATH' when abcde works compared to when it does not? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
