the config file included in the winex portage version 20020807 should work normally you'll find it in /usr/lib/winex/.data

here's the winex config I use for HL:

Code:

WINE REGISTRY Version 2
;; All keys relative to \\Machine\\Software\\Wine\\Wine\\Config

;;
;; MS-DOS drives configuration
;;
;; Each section has the following format:
;; [Drive X]
;; "Path"="xxx"       (Unix path for drive root)
;; "Type"="xxx"       (supported types are 'floppy', 'hd', 'cdrom' and 'network')
;; "Label"="xxx"      (drive label, at most 11 characters)
;; "Serial"="xxx"     (serial number, 8 characters hexadecimal number)
;; "Filesystem"="xxx" (supported types are 'msdos'/'dos'/'fat', 'win95'/'vfat', 'unix')
;;   This is the FS Wine is supposed to emulate on a certain
;;   directory structure.
;;   Recommended:
;;   - "win95" for ext2fs, VFAT and FAT32
;;   - "msdos" for FAT16 (ugly, upgrading to VFAT driver strongly recommended)
;;   DON'T use "unix" unless you intend to port programs using Winelib !
;; "Device"="/dev/xx" (only if you want to allow raw device access)
;;
[Drive C]
"Path" = "${HOME}/.winex/winex-drives/hl/c_drive"
"Type" = "hd"
"Label" = "Dos Drive"
"Filesystem" = "win95"

[Drive D]

I'm using 'WineX Game Installer ' to install each game with its own config file, registry and a seperate fake_windows dir....

This error can be caused by many factors:
some unclean registry files
a missing native dll in windows system dir (don't know if HL need some)
a wrong set option in the config file
...

Maybe try deleting your whole ~/.wine* dir and recreate it using Phoenix' WineX wrapper script (its located in /usr/bin/winex in the newest ebuild version)

If nothing helps, try looking through the Transgaming Forums
http://www.transgaming.com/searchgame.php
or Codeweavers App Db
http://appdb.winehq.org/

Maybe even something went wrong while compiling, re-emerge winex an have a look at the configure script, if any dependencies are unmet...
