Hello there,

that's my first posting to this mailing-list. I'm using Linux since early 1992. Last 3 years I spent my hole time in hacking Solaris on different workstations and servers. Now it's time to get back, because my new laptop arrives in a few days ;-)

For testing I choosed my Blade 150 with a second hard-drive. I installed gentoo and compiled kernel 2.4.24. XFree86 4.3.0.1 is installed, but won't run. I only got some ugly errors. Oh, I forgot that's a CRT from Sony (E220 - 17") is attached. After running "XFree86 -configure" I added this lines to /etc/X11/XF86Config:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 30-85
VertRefresh 48-120
EndSection

It found the onboard ATI Rage XL, which I want to use. The framebuffer is configured to run at 1024x768@85 and works fine. After starting X with startx my monitor said "Out of range" and does a poweroff. The logfile /var/log/XFree86.log.0 shows this:

(II) ATI(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 30.00-85.00 kHz
(II) ATI(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 48.00-120.00 Hz
(II) ATI(0): Maximum clock: 60.00 MHz
(II) ATI(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)
...

and so on. Is this maximum clock setting ok ? Doesn't it has to be a clock range ? The monitor specifies a max. dot clock of 220MHz. All default modes aren't used.

Maybe someone can help me to get this running.

Have you tried xf86cfg? This normally starts on fail safe settings.

You should find it in /usr/X11R6/bin

Option    "reference_clock"    "28.636 MHz"

to the "Device" Section.

worked out for me on a Blade100..

got the Tip from #gentoo-sparc

Hello there,

thanx to CeeBee: that worked great. Now my maximum clock rate is 121 MHz - and 109 is needed for running 1024x768 !

Maybe this should be added to an FAQ ?
