I'm currently using a DVD/CDRW combo drive in my Laptop. I'm currently using scsi emulation with my dvd drive linked to /dev/hdb. I start Mplayer with the command "mplayer -vo vx -gui -dvd-device /dev/hdb". It brings up Mplayer fine and I have a DVD entry in the menu but when I click on "open disc" nothing happens, no errors, nothing. I even mounted the drive before opening Mplayer and still got the same results, what am I doing wrong?

Try:

Code:

mplayer -vo vx -gui -dvd 1 -dvd-device /dev/hdb

See what gives. Is mplayer compiled with DVD support?

Yep, DVD is compiled into Mplayer. I tried the command and I got the following error:
Code:

libdvdread: Can't open /dev/hdb for reading.
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/hdb

I tried my original command(without the '-dvd 1' string) and it bring me back to my original problem.

what if you refer to the drive as an scsi-device?

Ok, seemed to me like it should've worked but it didn't. Below is a list of commands I tried:

mplayer -vo vx -gui -dvd-device /dev/sgo
mplayer -vo vx -gui -dvd-device /dev/sr0
mplayer -vo vx -gui -dvd-device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0

Those gave me the exact same results as 'mplayer -vo vx -gui -dvd-device /dev/hdb'. I also added '-dvd 1' and '-dvd 2' to each of the above command strings which resulted in Mplayer locking up.

Since you have got a combination drive....

Take a look in /etc/devfsd.conf and see if dvd is uncommented from the list. Make sure you are in some groups (/etc/groups to check permissions etc).

(If you did update devfsd.conf, do:

Code:
killall -HUP devfsd

to see the new changes.)

Normally, you shouldn't tell mplayer to see the dvd drive, just fire up mplayer (gui is best) and click open dvd. It should automatically load it.

I think that's all I could help you there (I'm at work so a lot of stuff is already done on my home machine...)

Have you tried ogle for playing DVDs? It plays them better than mplayer did for me (great support for menus and stuff).

I would use ogle if you can tell me how to enter arts into the USE= in make.conf so I can compile support arts support for ogle and how to configure oglerc for arts.
