I just installed gentoo 1.2 .. emerged openbox and tried to open an xterm from it but inothing happens. I emerged aterm as well and when trying to open it I see a debug line (if I go to ctrl-alt-Fx from where I launched X) saying : can't open slave tty (null).

I don't know how to get around it.. Searched on google and on gentoo forums but the problems I found are related to a user permission problem. I run X as root..

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

If you turned on "Unix98 PTY support" under "Character devices" in your kernel config, you need to turn on "/dev/pts file system for Unix98 PTYs" under "File systems". Your problem *may* be due to this.

I tried turning "Unix98 PTY support" and "/dev/pts file system" on but had the same problem. I tried changing several settings in the kernel but nothing seems to help.

In /proc/devices pty and ttyp are listed. Any other way to debug this issue ?

Here is the .config of the kernel in case it could help any further.

Thanks.

You can probably try:
Code:

strace -eopen -ostrace.out -f xterm -e echo

or
Code:

strace -ostrace.out -f xterm -e echo

The latter will be more verbose and probably give you better diagnostics. The file strace.out will contain the trace output.

You need to emerge strace to be able to do it.
