I was getting this: Code: | dm-rankin
9.071420 / 27.527071 / 70.510025 fps

But after tweaking my ~/.openalrc: Code: | (define speaker-num 2)
(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-out-device "hw:0,0")
(define alsa-in-device "hw:0,0") |
and replacing ut2004's stock openal.so and libSDL with gentoo compiled ones I get: Code: | dm-rankin

edit: using -nosound gives ~51 fps.

OK. To all you gurus out there why don't you post some things I can do to make this game not so damn jumpy. 35 seems REALLY low. I have an AMD 2100+ and 1.25G RAM. I don't think this video card is bad, or is it? This is the first game that I have EVER installed on my system so I don't know what I should do to optimize it. Please post some pointers.

Read the first post again. When he says "Save benchmark.sh into ut2004demo/Benchmark dir. " He means create a file called benchmark.sh in the ut2004demo/Benchmark directory and put the following in it.
After you have created the 2 files, cd to the ut2004demo/Benchmark directory and run it with "sh benchmark.sh"
I'm not sure that other file is necessary anyway. You will probably find the results are there already. |

With which USE flags did you compile libSDL and which version of ALSA and openal are you using? I ask because now that I've done the same as you my framerate has gone up and the sound quality is better ( at least I think it is ) but now the benchmark crashes about 3/4 of the way through. The game itself runs fine though. The benchmark DOES however output the score before it crashes |

Very interesting. After replacing libsdl and openal.so with gentoo compiled ones my score went up 10 points.

USE flags for libsdl-1.2.6-r3:
Code: | oss -alsa X dga xv xinerama fbcon directfb svga opengl |
(-alsa because a bug was making alsa support hog the cpu(which is now fixed in 1.2.7) )
flags for openal-20040218 (hardmasked):
Code: | alsa sdl oggvorbis mpeg |
I imagine the openal has a larger effect on framerate than libsdl, but I was just following what this guy said.

Have you compiled your own libsdl and openal and removed the ones from the ut2004demo/System dir as per the other posts on this page? |

I did. Before doing that I made a backup(just to make sure). The improvement is noticable. |

I know, a bit stranger here, I tried the benchmarking on Windows XP and it works there, too.
My Results:
UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2004-02-10_03.01]
Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 1997 MHz with 511MB RAM

Score = 49.741802
This is an AsRock K7VT2 Board with SDRAM and not DDR-RAM. So it might give you an idea. I might repeat the test with the DDR-RAMs which will be delivered in a couple of days *duck* |

I have got almost the same setup and get almost the same amount of fps (only 10 more after I upgraded to a better motherboard), but I think this is because ut2k4demo (and ut2k3) is heavily depending on your cpu in lower resolutions, so maybe benchmarking in 1280 or 1600 with everything high (and an other level) will shuffle the numbers a bit.
But hey, the game runs very good in 1280 at max detail (as far as the demo goes I mean) so I am not complaining

Hm, this is weird. I ran the benchmark as root (so I can cheat by using nice -n -20 ) and I got 38 points. But when I run the game as normal user, I get 41. It's not nice (screwing up and decreasing performance) because I ran it as root without nice and still got 38... where does this performance difference come from? _________________ if only I could fill my heart with love... |

Just to give some upgrade perspective: I upgraded to a 2400 athlonxp (thorton core) from my 1800, which is about a 500mhz difference in clock speed and am seeing a increase of ~7 points, with or without sound.

Which agpgart driver are you using? If you didnt set Option NvAGP in XF86Config then it tries to use the kernel agpgart and falls back on nvidia's implementation if the kernel has no support. You might try the opposite of whatever you are using currently. Other than that, I can only suggest you turn some eyecandy off, especially texture related stuff since you only have 64meg vid ram. |

Nvidia's NvAGP is considerably faster than AGPGART when using nforce2 based Mobo's. |
