I would like to know what's the difference between :
emerge -u world and emerge world ?
And it's available to emerge -u system and emerge system, so...

The only difference I can find is that --update (-u) also updates any dependencies of the chosen ebuilds. So if A depends on B but only A is in world, emerge world will update A but emerge -u world will update A and B. |
