I've done a fresh Gentoo install a couple of weeks ago and I'm remergen the tools I used to work with.

I'm running XFree 4.3.0 and XFce 4.0.3.1. I've got my keyboard layout set to us_intl. This works for most of my programs in X: X-Chat, Opera, ... I can type special characters like ï, ê, á, ...

I can't type these in OpenOffice or jEdit though. Does anyone know where I should look to get this solved?

hi fubarovic,

try to add this

Code:

export LANG="de_DE";

to you /etc/profile.

remember to replace "de_DE" with you country code.

to test these settings, just try the following:

Code:

export LANG="de_DE" jedit

regards marc

I added a line "export LANG="nl_BE@euro";" to /etc/profile. This partly fixes my problem: I can type the accented characters or most of them, but I can't type a ". This is pretty annoying during programming. :D

Have you got a clue how to fix that problem?

Thanx a lot already. :)

Adding the export... line changes the Linux language, tho.

No I get all kinds of lame messages in Dutch. I had my accents working properly on my former Gentoo install, without having to change the language.

Does anyone have another hint?

Can someone please help me?

This is the current status:

- I can type accented characters in Opera, X-Chat, XMMS.
- In jEdit and Eclipse I can type accented characters but not the accents themselves
- In OpenOffice I can't type any accents nor accented characters.

I really have no idea where to look anymore.

Ok, I fixed the problem!

I had to configure ALL locales: not just LANG= but also LINGUAS, ...
I'm not on my Linux computer right now so I can't post the correct settings right now, but I'll do it when I have the chance.

Just make sure all of the locales-settings have been set. I set them in my /etc/profile file.

You mean the TTY's or Xterms?

For TTY's, you simply have to edit the /etc/rc.conf file and to KEYMAP=us-acentos. That's the keymap for "us_intl" keyboards.

Did you specify every locale-variable? As I mentioned a few posts before.

If you've been using the setup for over a year, did it ever work properly? The terms I mean.

I had to configure every locale-setting (run locale in a console) to get things right. That's why I suggested it.

According to the localisation guide you should change it to your "country code".

Couldn't hurt to try. ;)

Code:

KEYMAP="dk-latin1"
EXTENDED_KEYMAP="windowkeys"
CONSOLEFONT="lat0-12"
CLOCK="UTC"
EDITOR="/bin/nano"
LC_ALL=da_DK
LANG=us
LC_CTYPE=da_DK
LC_NUMERIC=da_DK
LC_TIME=da_DK
LC_MONETARY=da_DK
LC_NUMERIC=da_DK

and locale still says posix .
i never had to change in this file before...
I wonder which package fucked this up ..

For typing accented characters in greek (and it should be the same in all other languages) all I need to add in /etc/profile is :

export LC_CTYPE=el_GR
export LC_COLLATE=el_GR

Actually I thing, only the first line is needed. This also fixed problems I used to have, like firefox working correctly with accented characters but ooo did not. I have to mention that adding the above two lines in my ~/.bashrc as described in the gentoo loc. guide, did not work properly.

Also, in XF86config the relative settings are :

Option "XkbLayout" "us,el"
Option "XkbVariant" "extended"
Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle"

This allows me to simply change between en/gr keyboards using left alt + shift.

LC_NAME=pt_PT
LC_ADDRESS=pt_PT

I don't have any line with "nodeadkeys" in my XF86config.

But eclipse is working, it's just jEdit that guives me troubles... I'm thinking this is a jEdit bug.

Any idea what the "POSIX" entry stands for in the locale variables listed above? I mean POSIX is not a country . . . :?

Thanks, I would, but I need this to be a multi-lingual machine.
