I tried to mount an audio cd today with the #mount /mnt/cdrom command (as root). Normally I can mount data cd's without a problem, but on mounting audio cd's it fails. When i'm using the cd on a windows installation it works on the same drive (so it's not the cd being unreadable or something).

This is the error message I get on my screen:

Code:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdroms/cdrom0, or too many mounted file systems.

My /etc/fstab looks like this:
Code:

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/hda1      /boot      ext3      noauto,noatime 1 1
/dev/hda3      /      ext3      noatime 0 0
/dev/hda2      none      swap      sw         0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0   /mnt/cdrom   iso9660      noauto,ro      0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom1      /mnt/brander    iso9660           noauto,rw               0 0
proc         /proc      proc      defaults      0 0

I like to use the drive for rippping the tracks to MP3 also, so do I have to change some more to get it working on my system?

Thanx in advance!

You can not mount audio CDs because there's no filesystem on them. If you want to grab audio tracks just refer to the /dev/cdrom device when the audio CD is inserted. You can play audio CDs with xmms for example by opening the /dev/cdrom folder in xmms.

I actually had to set mine up through xmms to work with the cd. It actually seems to mount it for you (but only if you run as root). Mine only works by directing it to /mnt/cdrom where it has mounted the cdrom. I followed the directions they have on the xmms site. Could yours actually just be using the CD player plugin to mount the cd and then it is just programmed to use the mount point when you click a device?

I really just want to know because right now it is kind of a pain to be able to play cds.

Add yourself to the cdrom group. This should fix the problem of having to be root.

Like the poster above, xmms only seems to see the audio tracks in the /mnt/cdrom directory when I am logged in as root. So I can't play audio cds as a user. I can't seem to get it to work as a user. The adding a user to the cdrom group didn't seem to make a difference.

Anyone know the trick?

Try these:

  1. Change the group of /mnt/cdrom to cdrom with this command:
    Code:
    # chgrp cdrom /mnt/cdrom

then make it "group readable" (no use making it group writeable, you cant write to a cdrom :P)
    Code:
    # chmod g+r /mnt/cdrom

  2. Edit your fstab to make the cdrom mountable by users, in general. My cdrom line looks like this:
    Code:
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom      iso9660         user,noauto,ro          0 0

Hope these tips help!

Chris

I was having the same problem, and I haven't resolved it (yet). However, I avoided the problem by just emerging cdplay. The source is like 14K, so it's pretty lightweight, yet functional. It's not an ideal solution (command-line based), but at least it works. Xmms still won't. :?
