|
|
Ok, after having millions of problems with Alsa, I just went ahead and compiled support for my soundcard into a 2.4.18 kernel. The sound quality isn't great, and I heard that 2.5 sound support is a lot better.
However, I'm using XFS on my boot and root partitions, and there don't seem to be any 2.5/XFS sources. Is there a way I can make a 2.5 kernel that will work with XFS? |

Given the question described, sounds like you're past the initial installation. Therefore, moving this from Installing Gentoo to Other Things Gentoo.

How is the 2.5 kernel now? is it relatively stable? |

Why is 2.5.x sound support better? All I heard was that it includes ALSA drivers in the kernel, so you can select 'em in make menuconfig. I don't think the sound quality will (at this moment) be any better then when using ALSA drivers and a 2.4.x kernel.
I wouldn't use an unstable kernel branch (that needs to be manually patched first) just for integrated ALSA sound support.
But nevertheless, I guess it's worth a try. You can always downgrade to a stable kernel again. |
