Well I finally got grub to work, and I can boot to my new gentoo stage 1 install . It boots no problem, but fails to load eth1 (nic card connected to the cable modem). When I go to /etc/init.d/ and type ifconfig -a net.eth1 it gives me the error "No device found". It does the same for eth0 too.
Since this is my first time compiling a kernel I'm pretty sure this would all work, but there probably is an option I missed when setting the kernel up. Any idea what option this would be? BTW these are PCI D-Link cards compatible with the realtek drivers, which I enabled when recompiling the kernel. |

shouldn't ifconfig just need "eth1" and not "net.eth1" ?
I could be wrong |

hmmmm 1 sec.. let me try that... well either way it isn't working.. When it loads the kernel msgs at the beginning where the Nic cards should be it just says VPCI will detect IRQ later or something... |

Did you get the base system installed, or are you tring to get networking after the installation?
Did you compile NIC support as a module, or into the kernel? If module, try into the kernel. What is the output of Code: | # /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start |

when I try doing that I get the msg "Unknown Interface: No Such Device" When I try that with eth1 instead it gives me the msg "Failed bringing eth1 up".
I was looking at the kernel bootup msgs and saw this VP_PCI "Bringing up chipset, but driver not compiled in." What do I need to enable in the kernel menuconfig? |

It sure sounds like the correct driver is not in your kernel. What is the exact model of your NIC cards, and which driver (please use the wording given in menuconfig, for clarity - there are a couple of "realtek drivers") did you compile into your kernel?

Earlier, you said "VPCI", and now "VP_PCI". I can't find mention of either of those in the kernel sources anywhere that looks relevant to your situation. Is this the exact message given by the kernel? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I made a number mistakes. I guess during install eth1 somehow became eth0, and I was trying to run dhcp for a Nic not connected to the outside world. 2nd mistake was I was loading Nic drivers into the kernel, not as modules. 3rd mistake was uncommenting the dhcp things in /etc/conf.d/net, I now load up eth0 normally and run dhcpcd eth0.
In other terms, I wasn't even close. Thx for the help tho. |
