As in the topic title, I am busy with a fresh install of Gentoo 1.1a and encoutered a problem during the bootstrap proces.

After compiling gcc-2.95.3-r5 the bootstrap-script tries to emerge groff-1.17.2-r1, after checking the configure settings it stops and dumps the following output on my screen:

Code:

.....
checking for g++... no
checking for c++... no
checking for gpp... no
checking for aCC... no
checking for CC... no
checking for cxx... no
checking for cc++... no
checking for cl... no
checking for KCC... no
checking for RCC... no
checking for xlC_r... no
checking for xlC... no
checking whether we are using the GNU C++ compiler... no
checking whether g++ accepts -g... no
checking that C++ compiler can compile simple program... no
configure: error: a working C++ compiler is required

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete succesfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 1, Exitcode 1
!!! (no error message)

!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/sys-apps/groff/groff-1.17.2-r1.ebuild

But I do have a C++ compiler installed! :x
Does anybody have an idea how to solve this problem? Is this a bug, or is it me doing something wrong?

Hey Rob3rt,

Could you please tell me where to find this new snapshot? I already tried to use the latest stage1-x86-1.1a.tbz2 tarball from gentoo´s ibiblio server, this didn't solve the problem

thanks in advance, Arnold

Trying to bootstrap myself into Gentoo using the 1.2 x86 iso, and when it got to groff, it complained about no C++ compiler. So, I searched the forums and found this thread and the bugzilla entry... Just thought I'd drop in and let people know this is broken again, and I've gone and reopened the bug.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1805

Here's hoping it gets fixed soon so's I can try out Gentoo; it sounds cool!

I got groff to compile by using a stage2-image (which includes a g++ executable) and then doing a 'emerge rsync' before bootstrapping. during bootstrap gcc gets rebuild while g++ remains untouched (I guess that's the bug: the bootstrap process does not build g++). i'm still surprised that we need g++ at all to bootstrap... :? Thanks to groff!

have a nice day!

Thomas
