kdm login

Lastnight i was glorious in getting x to start on my laptop, only took 2 days to get the config right, with the help of another member here. so kdm finished compiling which took several hours. i entered /usr/kde/3/bin/kdm and it started wonderfuly.

Then chose a user and entered the password and all my hopes and dreams died. I get Login incorrect, even though i used the right password and i can log into the shell using the same combo.

Any ideas from those that are smarter than me?

try deleting the user from the cli run #emerge superadduser , then setup a user account again using this program.....then once your logged in as that user again from the cli (not in X yet) #nano -w .xinitrc , to the empty file add "startkde" save and exit. then from the cli and logged in as the user you just created that file type startx. this should take you right into kde bypassing kdm

Now when i need to make adjustments to the system such as adjust the clock it wont authenticate the root password.

Any ideas about that?

well if your trying to su, you need to have the user added to the wheel group, otherwise i'm not sure
