Is there a way to darken the background in Sylpheed (I'm using Fluxbox wm)? The white background is killing my eyes.

Try another gtk/gtk2 theme - download it from freshmeat.net or themes.org and use some programs like themeswitch(i dont remember exactly) to use another theme.
