Hi,

This is my first experience with gentoo so please be kind. I have managed to download the
kernel source and configure and recompile them
but when I try to reboot with the new kernel
I get the error message:

VFS: cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option

I have tried changing to /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3 etc but get the same results.

I am using lilo with an existing mandrake installation. This boots for root=/dev/sda2
so I suspect the problme must be the modules that are compiled into the kernel (or not).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dave

Hi, welcome on the Gentoo bandwagon.

From the looks of it you have installed Gentoo on a (virtual) SCSI device, are you sure you have compiled in support for that device in the kernel ?

What kind of device have you installed it on ?

same happened to me make sure that in the kernel options, under SCSI -> Low Level Drivers, you have enebled SATA drives (and possibly the driver for your chipsete, in this case via and promise. Compile them in the kernel, not as modules.

Thanks for the replies. Compiling the
correct SCSI drivers into the kernel fixed the problem.

As for the virtual SCSI issue,
I have only come across this beofre in terms of
using it with ATAPI IDE cdrom burners. I wonder
why is it used here for the ATA hard drives?
