I'm using openoffice pt-br (portuguese-brasilian).
I HAD the following problem:

my enviroment variables were:

LANG=pt_BR
LC_ALL=pt_BR
LANGUAGE=55
GDM_LANG=pt_BR.UTF8

but i just couldnt put the Ç in openoffice.

What i found out later is that if you are using GDM, oppenoffice ignore this stuff and uses this enviroment variable:
GDM_LANG
but my GDM_LANG was set!!!

the end:
Openoffice doenst handle this corectly.
when i set GDM_LANG=pt_BR,
magicaly all accents started to work again!!!

I think this aply to many other languages such as French or German.

I use the Compose-key (#1) + "," and then "c" or "C".

#1: My .Xmodmap:

keycode 0x75 = SunCompose

0x75 == "right-click-menu-key"
