At least if someone did root their dns server, they were nice enough to set it nice and low so that when it's fixed it should be up again in 5 minutes max. Otherwise we'd have to wait for hours and hours.

true... either way, at least they were nice enough to keep the TTL nice and low.
It could be 86400... then we'd have to wait a day. Or like comcast used to do, keep it at 604800 (7 days). So when they screw up your entry in the reverse DNS tables, it still takes a week to get propagate. Gar...

The key is how many people are trying to access the rsync mirrors at the moment - if there is a lot of load, then it may be easier to remove the load, fix the issue, and then allow the connections again. DNS with a low TTL is faster than trying to go to each server, get it repaired, and bring it back up again. Of course, this is all guesswork on my part, but if so I can understand the logic .. of course I could also be completely wrong |

hmmm, all we can do is wait.
wait for an announcement.
wait for the mirrors.
wait for the dns-servers.
we can put that on the list of things you have to wait for your whole life:
elevators, trains, traffic lights, colleagues, internet-connections etc etc
what was that, a total of 20 percent of your life that's spent waiting for something? _________________ ->searched for a gentoo penguin ->alienated it with "find edges", "saturation", "photocopy" ->encoded quicktime from still ->played with aaxine ->screenshotted ->made it my avatar

what this would also do would be keep the mirror rsync servers from trying to sync against the server they are fixing. They will sync against themselves, also resolving the load and creating weird errors if they're restoring from backup.
Once they have the master rsync server back up, they change the dns record back, and the mirrors can then resync.

Announcement has been made http://www.gentoo.org/
Quote: |
We are currently experiencing some problems with the server that hosts the master portage tree for Gentoo Linux. We are working to reectify the problem as soon as possible, but anticipate at least a few more hours of downtime. In the mean time, please avoid syncing your portage tree via the emerge sync command. Our apologies for the troubles.

i guess they really are into trouble right now.
it's the core of the system that makes gentoo unique which is down.
hell, i imagine an ant population, admins running around looking for a solution. *g* _________________ ->searched for a gentoo penguin ->alienated it with "find edges", "saturation", "photocopy" ->encoded quicktime from still ->played with aaxine ->screenshotted ->made it my avatar

Well I hope they just don't reectify the situation and not tell us what it was. I bet they will though. I hope its not another hack attempt. I can't listen to anymore Microsoft propaganda about how Linux is not secure. This would just add more fuel to the fire. |

You probably haven't unmasked the new Portage yet. If you *really* want to do this then add the following to your /etc/portage/package.unmask file (creating both the file and the directory if they don't already exist):
Code: | >=sys-apps/portage-2.0.50_pre1
>=app-portage/gentoolkit-0.2.0_pre1 |

There seems to have been a bug in portage too.
`emerge -uDp world` just downgraded
Code: |
[ebuild UD] app-portage/gentoolkit-0.1.38 [0.2.0_pre4]
[ebuild UD] sys-apps/portage-2.0.49-r21 [2.0.50_pre14]

no no, it worked, I just wanted to point out that there seems to be a problem with the newer versions of these packages. Thus they have been removed from the portage tree for now. |

Just an obeservation.
Everything seems to run smooth when removing /usr/portage/metadata/timestamp.chk file before each sync
At least on the swedish mirror |

I've the same problem and I'm still unable to rsync
And here's another "funny" thing: on the machine where I try to do
is running a vncserver, if i try to kill it I see:
Code: | vncserver -kill :1
Can't find file /home/micron/.vnc/rsync.gentoo.org:1.pid
You'll have to kill the Xvnc process manually
|
What on the hell is
Code: | .vnc/rsync.gentoo.org:1.pid |
