speaker support is at
Code:

Device Drivers  --->
Input device support  --->
[*] Misc
< >   PC Speaker support

I can't understand why so many people are annoyed by the speaker..
mine isn't broken anymore (lil'bastard... grrr...) (the outpout on the mainboard, not the speaker itself.. tryed a otherone.. I f***ing hate this mainboard.. :( ) and I'm searching for a way to redirect it to a soundcard..

asus boards have a speaker soldiered on from the factory :wink:

Hmm, all Asus boards? Mine doesn't have one :?

Well, I have a Via chipset, so that might make a difference.

Well, here is the solution : add 'xset -b b 0' to /etc/conf.d/local.start . Worked for me :)

look here

Basically, it tells you that you don't have to disable the speaker in your kernel. Instead, just do the following:

"In Xfree you can turn the PC-speaker bell on and off with the xset commands option b - manual page"
Code:
xset b off

"To turn off the pc speaker on console mode use setterm with the argument blength - manual page"
Code:
setterm -blength 0

Also see this entry in the gentoo wiki

Personally I like the PC speaker... on my desktop. I actually manually enable it everytime I compile a new kernel. It beeps everytime I have a new mail in pine, which is good. Now on my laptop it's REALLY annoying. I just haven't gotten around to compiling it out yet.

As an aside, what I ended up doing was editing /etc/inputrc as suggested in the gentoo wiki (see link above):
Code:
# do not bell on tab-completion
set bell-style none

This turns off the PC speaker for tab completion, backspace, etc, but leaves it enabled for system beeps & program notifications. (For example, now portage can still beep at me to tell me it's done or when an important message scrolls by, but it doesn't beep when I tab complete.) It was the tab completion beeping that was driving me nuts anyhow.

Ah the system bell... a vestige of the days we thought the faint crackling of our system speaker while playing wolfenstine was kewl.

Now how do I turn the god forsaken thing off.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's in the kernel config.

Device Drivers -> Input Devices -> Miscellaneous devices -> PC Speaker support

Why it is in Input Devices is beyond me, though...
