A week later and its installed and boots ok!

Brand new Gentoo (and Linux) user here, just got Gentoo installed after a week at looking at dumbass problem. I'm so ashamed that I did not pick up on it earlier, and that I did not read the handbook fully.

"dev/ROOT" in the example fstab needs to be changed to "dev/whererootpartitionreallyis"... and I have been trying to work out why "dev/ROOT" can't be mounted since last Monday.

That'll be one of those things that we don't tell anybody about, ever, ok? :-)
