Wow: that was a fast reply. Seconds after I clicked "post" your reply appeared.
Time for definitions/clarifications. There is confusion between mp3 the file format and software that reads/writes in this file format. The file format has patent (but they do expire (but that's another matter)). Open or closed software can be (and has been) written to read/write that format. There exist open source mp3 packages in the portage tree (and elsewhere). heck, I had the source for the lame mp3 encoder on my old Amiga back in the day.
So, given all of that, mp3 software can be open or closed source, right?
Can't get more open source than this: http://lame.sourceforge.net/ |

But none of that matters because OGG gives better compression rates anyway. |

Haha I can see the headline on Slashdot already:
| Quote: | | An anonymous poster writes: Hundreds of Gentoo users have come together in what is now the first drunken online chorus. In order for this musical innovation to be possible, a project, drunkenchorus.sourceforge.net, was founded that utilized Audacity and OpenQuicktime's RTP in order to merge up to 2048 audio streams to a single resultant sound stream. Gentoo fans raved on and on for nearly 6 hours until the master server went down. It is rumored that the Microsoft-centric ISP providing bandwidth to the master server intentionally broke the connection, but declined to comment on the situation. The resultant sound stream was saved and encoded immediately. A torrent for the 14 GB sound stream can be found here. |

Thank you! However, don't you guys think it would be cool to have a program that can merge multiple RTP inputs into a single resultant stream? It'd require LAN-like bandwidth, but it might actually be useful for musicians. Maybe this summer... |

Hi all,
So, as a Gentoo song, I propose : Fischer Spooner - Emerge
This song is really cool and perfectly fits to the emerge spirit so _________________ Décidémment tu n'es vraiment pas très sympa, mais le train de tes injures roule sur les rails de mon indifférence et j'aime mieux partir plutôt que d'entendre çà plutôt que d'être sourd ! |

Well he said "a gentoo song", not the gentoo song. You can have more than one |
