I had the same problem when I installed the binary XFree86 distribution. Now that I have enough disk space to complete the emerge xfree, I removed that failed installation and did emerge xfree. After it finished two days later (P100/64MB system), I did XFree86 -configure to start setting things up. Screen went blank for about 10 seconds, then the PC speaker started beeping quickly for another 5-10 seconds, then the console came back up. There were a ton of unresolved symbols errors followed by a fatal server crash that terminated the process. This is the same problem I had with the binary distribution. Why does this happen?

hate to say it, but I dont see hardly anything that could be the problem other than your current hardware.

I hate to say it but, Try upgrading..

sorry, but if you want a good distro that runs on slow hardware try slackware...

soon gentoo will have a stage 4 which will have X and such, but even then it might not run on old hardware because gentoo usaually compiles things for i686.

The insane machine thread and delta407's worst hardware thread would beg to differ with you. I have Gentoo running self-bootstrapped from stage 1 on a Pentium 133. butters, please do not give up.
