Is it possible to add a 4th choice to etc-update? Much like -5 merges all updated files (without mercy), would it be practical to have, say, -7 to do nothing and delete all files? This would be handy if you're just recompiling a bunch of stuff at once and you know for fact you won't be updating any config files.....
It's a pain in the arse to etc-update 15 files (binutils is a good example) and to have to delete them one by one...
Thanks |

I always do a find on '._cfg???_*' in /etc just for my own info.
If you reckon you don't need them it's easy enough to delete them.
etc-update don't give a damn if there are no files to update, it just terminates - even gives you a message. |

You know what? I never even thought of that. But still, for consistancy's sake, it would still be nice to have that extra option....
But nonetheless, your suggestion works just fine. |

I'd agree with the poster.
We really need to have a -7 option or something. Maybe with an extra warning.
But if I go from foobar-2.8.67 to foobar-2.8.68 and it has sixty config files, no way I'm updating them for a simple bugfix release. _________________ word. |

You should probably post this to the Gentoo Bugzilla as most of the developers don't read the forums. |

If it is a simple update or bugfix etc-update will treat these as trivial changes and automerge them. Only when it determines the file is significantly changed will it prompt the user for intervention. |
