the great little office suite looks like it's going to be released under a GPL.

I followed the links to the Register's original source. The interview indicates the thing is going to be GPL'd but also have commercial versions. The company does not have anyone on the payroll, but expects to have 8-10 on the books shortly. The company's main page indicates that you can pre-order a Linux version for $80 or download and try the pre-alpha version.

My guess is this is a ploy to get testers to try out their product for a while, then go 100% commercial, like Star Office.

I'm not going to be a dup until I actually see it GPL'd.

$80 for pre-alpha? I wonder if their next product will be a bridge in a desert.

wonder if the bridge will raise and lower to let big ships though it?

I think what was ment was that the $80 will be for the finished product not the pre-alpha. my impression is that the pre-alpha is a free download.

Their windows version of the office suite is currently $75 usd, wonder if the linux version will come down to that or lower eventually?

hahaha, the pre-alpha was free (as in cost), and came in binary form only. After playing around with it a few months ago I was EXTREMELY impressed. A 16 meg download contained a fully-featured and fast Gtk office suite (which will be Gtk2 upon its release). It has been said 1000 times, but Openoffice is just too bloated, but has a lot of potential. Just look at Mozilla, there was a time when the code was such a mess that the idea of a 1.0 release seemed like a joke, but the code base has turned itself around wonderfully.

GoBe is cross-platform and very fast now, hopefully freeradicalsoftware can fill the need for such an office suite now, while the others continue to develop.
