Hi,
I'm completely new and incompetent user of Gentoo and Linux itself so excuse me in advance for this mess.
1. Recently Downloaded both workstation and server Live-Cd ISOs (v5.0)
Tried the server thing out and after an hour of installation got "Kernel Panic" statement. Tried reinstalling - all the same. Dunno why. Probably a bad download or burnt it improperly.... doesn't matter anyway
2. Got the 136 MB boot cd with prebuilt binaries - installed the base (used stage3 tarball, and the installation guide on gentoo.org site)
Reset the BIOS, Rebooted from the harddrive - everything's fine except for my SMC-Ultra network card
All worked from the cd.
Now, I found a couple of things in the gentoo-user mailing lists with exactly the same problem, but with no replies
Except for "probably recompile the kernel without PREEMPT option".
The /lib/modules/*/......./net directory only has dummy.o in it, wich doesn't work
Copied smc-ultra.o from the Live-CD (136Mb one has only tars on it) - doesn't work- says "can't locate the file"
depmod says that it's not an .EFL or .ELF file
So, how do i get it workin' now?
3. How do I install kde and other stuff from the cd, not the internet?
How to get the list of dependencies wich Portage hides, so i could copy them all into /usr/portage/distfiles directory
Or advise my with some better ways of doing it without the internet or partly with it
I Guess that's all for now.
Hope this nice community will help me,
Cheers, Dennis |

Did you compile support for your SMC card as a module or into the kernel? The install CD may find the right card, but it doesn't automatically select it for the config process. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
