I installed Gentoo on the same HD with Yellow Dog, added Gentoo's parameters to yaboot.conf as a separate boot option and updated the bootloader with ybin from within YDL. Afterward I was able to fire up either distro at will but I noticed that the YDL kernel version always ran. I figured that the partition=6 parameter in yaboot.conf was the reason as this is where that kernel resides but neither changing the number nor commenting it out did anything new. Not sure what else could be overriding the root=/dev/hda11 parameter in the Gentoo boot option, I then tried re-creating the bootloader on /dev/hda5 from within Gentoo, first with ybin, after which I discovered that neither kernel would now load. Yikes! I chrooted back into Gentoo via the install cd and tried to re-create it successfully with mkofboot after re-checking all the parameters in yaboot.conf and being sure of the partition numbers. Still fried. I then re-initialized the bootloader partition, once using mac-fdisk, another time using the YDL installer, and tried mkofboot again, which BTW always reported a successful execution. Still no dice. (Worse, now I'm locked out of YDL where all my work is.)
The message I'm getting from the bootloader is:
Welcome to yaboot version 1.3.6
. . .
boot:
Please wait, loading the kernel . . .
hd:11,/boot/vmlinux: Unable to open file, Invalid device
The message is the same whether opting to load Gentoo or YDL.
Anybody know what's happening here?
Thanks. |

Did anyone come up with an answer on this question? I've got the same set of problems.

i can't seem to find any resolution to this on the boards. was this ever solved?
i have a new install of 1.2 on a dual usb ibook.
/dev/hda9 - osX
/dev/hda10 - macos
/dev/hda11 - bootstrap
/dev/hda12 - swap
/dev/hda13 - root
--
osX, macos, the cdrom boot options all work.
get the same error as above on my gentoo boot, only my root is on hda13
in yaboot.conf
image=/boot/vmlinux
partition=13
label=gentoo
root=/dev/hda13
read-only |

Sounds like something is still missing in your yaboot.conf file... make sure you have the proper OF path to hard drive set, etc (they are near the top). Check the ppc faq or man yaboot.conf for more details. |
