Error "Segmentation Fault" during Stage3 un-taring process

Hey guys...

I'm totally a newbie...

I'm trying to install Gentoo in an old Laptop I have (It is a Dell Inspiron 8100, PIII, 512RAM, 20GB HDD).

I'm following the Gentoo Installation Handbook to install Gentoo on that Laptop..

I'm following it step by step and I'm getting an anoying error when I'm trying to un-tar the stage3-pentium3 TAR file...

I did verify the MD5 signature for that file (tar) and it is OK, I did download another stage3 tar file from Internet and verified the MD% signature and it was OK, but both are failing.. I did try with stage2 (instead of stage3) and it is just the same...

I hope you guys can give me a hand...

Howdy,

Possibly bad ram? I've had odd things happen with tarring and un-tarring files due to bad ram. You could boot up the memtest86 kernel on the live CD and let it run. If it finds errors, you have your answer. Check out the following doc for more information of diagnosing bad hardware:

are you sure you mounted a partition from your hard drive on /mnt/gentoo?
i have accidentally made the same mistake before, trying to unpack all the source w/o mounting an hd partition. what happens is all the main memory fills up and then youre stuck having to reboot...
just make sure you mount a partition and you should be good to go
also if youre sure you have mounted a partition make sure that you are in the /mnt/gentoo directory
#cd /mnt/gentoo
to get there or
#pwd
should say
/mnt/gentoo
before you try to untar the source

Hmmm just had the same problem on an HP DL360 using a 2005.1 disk. 4GB ram, dual Xeon. I ended up copying a tar binary from another install and ran it locally. I've not other issues doing the rest of the install so I'm inclined to think there is something wrong with the included tar binary.

Either bad ram or perhaps a coaster on the cd.
