I successfully installed gentoo on my new computer after some problems and big help from pietinger (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1169119.html)

But now I have some problems while I also tried to install KDE

  • System is not shutting down
    Simply stopping after

    Code:
    * Remounting remaining filesystems read-only ...
    * Remounting / read only ...
    [ 167.736781] ECT4-fs (nvme0n1p3): remounted 2ce4ff80-a9ae-420b-a029-086951118f16 ro. Quota mode: none. [ok]

  • Tried to install kde with sddm (switched profile without explicit building before but built immediately afterwards)

    • But sometimes complete screen flickers (between textual and graphical ?) till i stopped the sddm
    • Xorg.0.log seems to not finding my Radeon graphic card

  • At least once system didnt configured network => Needed to start services manually
  • The new system is periodically writing to console
    Code:
    INIT: Id "s1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I am trying to ue it as developer system with distribution kernel (for simplicity), OpenRC, UEFI and grub.

Currently I tried sddm as login manager. If another login manager is better I can switch that.

There could be more than one issues currently. But let's try one at a time.

Can you share your /etc/inittab?
What is you init system for this machine?

Next time, please use code tags for content pasted inline. Also, as Pietinger's Wiki page requested, use a pastebin for large outputs such as dmesg.

I simply followed the Installation manual, but I think that must be the OpenRC

/etc/inittab

    SlowMotion,

    I think you are using a "PC" so do you really have second serial port?

    To reduce pollution of this thread topic I suggest you open a different topic for this problem if you wish to discuses more.

    In the mean time please comment out the line "s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 115200 ttyS1 vt100" in /etc/inittab and do
    Code:
    kill -HUP 1
    as root. (or sudo kill -HUP 1)

Just to be clear and for your information.

The command "kill -HUP 1" does not mean it kill process. it is a very old unix convention, what it does is send a signal to process id "1" which usually is "init" to tell it to reload it's configuration file, which usually is /etc/inittab.

Another way is to run telinit q and can be less confusing.

SlowMotion,

I will handle these problems now:

---
a) But sometimes complete screen flickers (between textual and graphical ?) till i stopped the sddm
b) Xorg.0.log seems to not finding my Radeon graphic card
c) At least once system didnt configured network => Needed to start services manually
---

(a) and (b) I will do together ... because it surely has the same reason: You miss the firmware files for all kernel modules which needs firmware:
Code:
[ 3.546434] i915 0000:00:02.0: Direct firmware load for i915/adls_dmc_ver2_01.bin failed with error -2
...
[ 3.880791] amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: Direct firmware load for amdgpu/dimgrey_cavefish_sos.bin failed with error -2
...
[ 7.208340] r8169 0000:06:00.0: Direct firmware load for rtl_nic/rtl8168h-2.fw failed with error -2

Just do a emerge linux-firmware

The AMD can NOT work at all without firmware. The GPU of the Intel CPU (i915) also works without firmware (but not well). I hope that the firmware for your ethernet also fixes this (so you should check again):
Code:
[ 11.150045] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 12.072870] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Down
[ 13.928323] platform INT3515:01: deferred probe pending
[ 17.070092] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 17.999221] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Down
[ 22.809299] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 23.839587] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Down
[ 28.687372] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 29.157783] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Down
[ 34.384621] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 34.736026] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Down
[ 37.972872] r8169 0000:06:00.0 enp6s0: Link is Up - 100Mbps/Full - flow control rx/tx

(c) has a simple reason: You have not started DHCP, netifrc or networkmanager. You will need one of these. The simplest is of course DHCP ( https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Network_management_using_DHCPCD )

I use a static IP address and have (check with "ip a" the name of your ethernet) this configured with netifrc:
Code:
$ ls -al /etc/init.d/net.*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     6 19. Mai 2023  /etc/init.d/net.enp2s0 -> net.lo
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 20018 30. Mai 18:15 /etc/init.d/net.lo
 ~ $
 ~ $ more /etc/conf.d/net
config_enp2s0="192.168.2.9/24"
routes_enp2s0="default via 192.168.2.1"
 ~ $
 ~ $ rc-update
            alsasound | boot
...
           net.enp2s0 |      default

Or take a look into: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Network_management

Problem a) and b)

I emerged the linux-firmware (adapted allowed license for this package)

=> Now the graphical login appears, and I can log in
But the mouse is very very laggy (after moving mouse i need to wait at least 0.5 seconds before target point reached, then adjust movement, ... takes more than 10 seconds to reach an entry in already open start menu) :/
And load (shown in top from other pc via ssh) is higher than 15
Suddenly the load dropped (to around 2) and the mouse run smooth, but can click anything in menu :(

Problem c)
I already had configured it statically including net.enp6s0 (and thought the services were already configured as it automatically worked al the other times :/ )
will see if it occurs again

@pingtoo : The command helped :D

As your "rc-update" didnt showed it, then you have probably only forgotten to do a "rc-cupdate add net.enp6s0 default". (I can not do the Mouse at the moment ... real live :-(

real-life is the highest priority interrupt :)

I can wait if needed, I don't die if it takes some more time :)

After reboot the laggy mouse reappears.

Found in /var/log/messages

Quote:
May 31 20:03:05 gentoo1 kernel: perf: interrupt took too long (2577 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 77400
May 31 20:03:52 gentoo1 kernel: perf: interrupt took too long (3223 > 3221), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 61800
May 31 20:04:28 gentoo1 kernel: perf: interrupt took too long (4135 > 4028), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 48300

Will search for that

But I am confused, can't find a konsole or terminal in menu (searching for konsole only result in setting for setting Terminal-Emulator :/

Havent found helpfull information to kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate

But continued searching for very laggy cursor.

And recognized that kde with wayland created load of 22.

Deactivated display-manager and it dropped to nearly 0.

I tried short with xdm and was able to login => load < 1 (didnt knew how to leave from that window-manager, so i just deactivated display-manager again to leave)

Then I tried again with sddm => greeter itself used on one cpu 30%

On starting kde with wayland it kicked up to a load of 22 (around 2200%)

Then I tried to use kde with x and load only raised minimal ( < 0.01 )

And the mouse cursor is REALLY fast :D

So it seems to me, that the problem is wayland, but without it works for me (If someone wants to inverstigate why it is so bad, just ping me :D )
