Messed up root file permissions (i think)

I'm not a 100% sure this is the right category but it's closest i can find. I was installing LFS (Linux from scratch) for fun using my main Gentoo install on my laptop. But when I tought i went to the part where you are isolated from the main system i noticed my power button was gone and i could no longer run sudo. I tought it was that i messed up the permissions where i accedentially give lfs user my system root permissions instead of the mount root, in the root folders but they are all owned by root and the issue is still there. I managed to fix the sudo command but i also can't switch user to root anymore in a terminal it just tells me access denied. I don't know what else could be going on. I installed a temporary debian installation alongside my gentoo installation so that i can continue my college work but maybe it could be useful for chrooting into the system and solving problems that way if thats how you could maybe help it out.

Since the original post provides no direct description of what was changed, and only one error message which can have many causes, our ability to help with this is very limited.

Does a login as root on the tty work?
What is written to the system log when sudo fails?
What is the full output on the terminal from /usr/bin/sudo -i, when run from a user that ought to have working sudo access (but does not)?
What is the output of namei -l /etc/passwd /etc/shadow?
