Hey everyone, I'm switching over to pipewire for my audio needs on my main workstation, and I think I've gotten everything working except:
Steam/Discord Voice Chat
- Steam: Others can hear my mic, and they say I'm loud and clear, but I can't hear anyone else; I don't even hear the normal ringing noise when calling another user.
- Discord: Cannot see my mic/headset at all.
Browser media
- Steam Store pages have no sound
- YouTube has no sound
- Audio streaming on Bandcamp works fine
- Other sites have sound, or not, depending on the video. In some cases the audio is warped (super slow)
I've been trying to troubleshoot my pipewire against a computer where everything works properly, and I recently rebuilt pipewire with abi_x86_32 and dbus support, but I haven't had any luck fixing the above issues. Steam voice chat is the priority, as I'd like to be able to use my headset, but resolving all the above issues would be nice.

I'm currently running emerge -uDNe @world as a move of frustration, but that's probably excessive. Does anyone have any recommendations? |

| Never mind. I may have solved this; I noticed that my main workstation lacks the general "pipewire" flag in /etc/portage/make.conf, but it's present in the laptop one. Not sure how I missed that; probably lack of sleep. Will advise after a rebuild if it's fixed. |

Pipewire supports a bunch of protocols, I don't even see a lot of programs with pipewire use flag, it's not necessary for things to work.
The first thing, have you set pipewire as the default audio device in ALSA?
Second, connect to pipewire with a jack client (or run pw-link -iolm ) and see if your applications create ports and get linked to sources and sinks as required.
A partially working app might be affected by some kind of a policy problem. Maybe it hooks itself to a wrong output, or maybe something flat out prohibits access. |

Hey szatox, thanks for your thoughts.
On a deep @world rebuild with the pipewire flag enabled, things seem to be working correctly now aside from Discord voice chat. Discord cannot detect my mic at all, but I have consistent sound in my browsers and while I haven't had a chance to test my headset on steam yet, I am able to hear the 'ringing' tone it made before when calling another user, so I'll tentatively assume it works for now.
I'm assuming the problem with discord is some kind of policy problem, how I would look into that? My user is already in the audio group, and discord doesn't seem to have any meaningful USE flags I can modify. |

PW combines features from different sound servers, notably jack (patch bay) and pulseaudio (volume controls on everything).
I manage patch bay with catia, though pw-link is quite useful for debugging too. |
