I am a newcomer on Linux scene and am learning my way around this worderful
piece of software. I have come far over the past few days. However I have
run across an annoyance that I need to fix and learn something about file
permissions along the way. When I freshly installed KDE I was able to
start the file manager in super user mode and get full access to the files.
In the past few days when I click on the menu item the kdesu window comes
up prompting for the root password. Once enetered the file manager
application does not come up at all. If I hit ignore konqueror starts up
in regular user mode just fine. If I kdesu applications such as user
manager, they work fine. It's only kdesu konqueror that fails. I looked
in /usr/kde/3/bin/ and konqueror's file permissions are the same as the
other applications that work. I had read somewhere about a magic cookie
based secrity feature used by konq, but I have not found a solution yet.
Any help is appreciated.

I would help ya, except when it comes to KDE I'm a total idiot

Just letting you know that we're reading it, and waiting for someone who knows what they are talking about.

Just letting you know I have this same problem. Tried running konqueror by typing "kdesu konqueror", all I got was a message box asking for the root password but nothing after that. The console even became ready for another command, as if it had finished what it was doing. As far as I know, all other programs work...except konqueror. I also set up Gentoo on my bro's box with KDE and running konqueror using kdesu works beautifully on his system. Damn him :)

Looking for solution also. I just installed 1.4rc1 and it was working several days ago. Have done some update and now it isn't, not sure why. It is working on the 1.2 system fine.

I got this problem everytime I update KDE. When it occurs I login as root (only once) in KDM and configure the desktop, window style, colors, icons, konqueror settings etc. Next time when I login as normal user and use kdesu konqueror/konsole, these root settings are used for display and everything works like expected.

Hey, that worked perfectly. Thanks. It was even easier cause I hadn't gone in as root yet in KDE, so did like you said, started konqueror and su terminal and then logged back in as user and everything working.

Thanks!

This probably should be a sticky.
