Is it completely impossible to find posts with any relevance to what you search for? Teach the me tricks to find what I want without having to browse useless posts or search 10 times in a row to get a result. I even searched for a search howto and that failed too. I'm so used to using google where I enter almost any phrase and always find what I look for. For example. I get an error message: | Code: |
Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display ":1.0"
|
so I cut and paste that in quicksearch and get 1! hit. searching for the words extension, missing, display, RENDER and so on all fails to get me any relevance. Normally (not in this case >_<) entering an error message in google results in many good links, often to mailing lists where people have similar problems and one lure out what it actually means.
I can't possibly imagine to be the first who encounter things so I thought searching for it instead of spamming threads everywhere would be a good idea, unless you can proove me wrong I think I have to change my mind. |

I just tried "xlib extension missing error" on the quick search and it gave me this as the first result:

Just be creative, sometimes you have to search for the general topic instead of the precise error. Or at least that is what I do.
I hope the link is what you're looking for.

Please understand that the phpBB search engine isn't based on google and has many known flaws. However, it is open source and gets better with every release. For the most part, it can work pretty well when used properly. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

I've noticed some of those flaws and I agree that most software should get better for every release otherwise there's no point with the release, be it open source or not. But just because it's open source isn't reason enough to use it if it contains flaws and doesn't work properly.
Also I'm sure it works just fine if you know how it behaves, but for one that doesn't know the tricks and is used to the google way of searching and finding it is a bit disheartening, especially since there are no pointers on how to proceed. |
