Hm. well, I haven't exactly been using Gentoo for 20 years. That's more like how long I've been using linux in general.
Running Gentoo for about 18 years. I would have to disagree with this statement:

a lot has changed:
- Stage1 and Stage2 installs are still possible, but not documented in the handbook anymore.
- revdep-rebuild isn't really needed anymore - it's still there, but as far as I can discern, it's only for if something goes sideways.
- drastic improvements on how well portage works.
- app-portage/layman is still in the repo, but its functionality has been entirely supplanted by app-eselect/eselect-repository
- I think it should be apparent, but supported architectures have been expanded in some areas, contracted in others. (arm64 and riscv being the most notable in the past 5 years or so)
...and likely a lot more, but those are mostly in line with what's already been mentioned - support for newer technologies, languages, and techniques, and deprecation of older ones. |

I started using Gentoo around 2004.
Back then the hottest thing was how to speed up Gentoo using NPTL.
I contributed to one of the threads on optimised NPTL install:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-274968-view-next.html-sid-.html
How time flies.
Seems like I have missed all the systemd-vs-openrc war and the wayland-vs-xorg war.
I tried KDE on my return as it was the last DE I used, too bloated now, tried hikari and wayfire before settling down on twm for now.
systemd? I only use systemd-boot in lieu of Grub but openrc everything else.
I think that epitomises Gentoo's strength, the ability to mix and match. |

Those are still ongoing.

Systemd is a sneaky devil.
Code: | $ eix -I systemd

Wow, eix still around after these years
Oh, I notice there's a lot less people on this forum. And Gentoo developers it seems.
But there is now a wiki where there used to be none. |

There was a wiki, but something happened and the data was lost if I recall. That happened not long before I was inactive for a number of years. I recall that some (or most) of the data had been restored. I wrote a few how-tos in the former site gentoo-wiki.com. The machine I wrote them on has been recycled. I hope to start contributing again as I enjoyed doing that. _________________ Screw you guys, I'm going home... |

I'm a gentoo user from 2002.
For various reasons, I haven't used much linux since then and I'm very very far behind.
Looking forward to installing latest gentoo on one of my very old HP G5 server.
Can you relate to me some of the important changes since, say, 2005-2006 (when I really got un plugged)
I herd a kerfuffle about something called "systemd", is that resolved ?
Any major changes I should know about ?
Maybe a history of the important stuff of the last 20 years in gentoo ? Is anyone keeping a journal or a history of gentoo ? |
Welcome back! make.conf is now in /etc/portage
It sounds like an interesting notion to be unplugged for a couple of decades. </me ponders> |

hey, could be worse, at least he didn't say "Hurd" a kerfuffle. That one will never be resolved. |
