I'm thinking of installing Gentoo on my 1GHz combo eMac, but have a couple of questions.
1) Will my internal modem work, out of the box?
2) Will I need to wipe my existing Mac OS X installation to partition for Gentoo?
Thanks. |

1) You can use your modem by kernel setting.
2) If you have no partitions except an OSX partition, you should do repartition. In this situation, you have no choices as I think. _________________ With ibook! |

GNU parted should be able to resize and add partitions non-destructivly. If it works, your mac partition would be fine, just smaller. I haven't used it, however, and you would probably need to boot off a cd with gnu parted on it to do anything to your root partition.
Anyway, good luck. _________________ The new scum |

Thanks for the responses so far.
What exactly are these issues with the Radeon? |

I have been reading the installation guide - it mentions you need a network connection to continue. Yet, it doesn't mention PPP/Modem connections - just ethernet/broadband solutions. My question is: can I install my system over a modem? If so, how with my Apple V.92 internal modem?
Thanks, the level of support on this board has already encouraged me ever so much to try Gentoo. Very impressive, so much so I might even give the trusty Debian install on my old x86 box it's walking papers! |

You can install over a modem, but it will be a lot of downloading time. You might want to make heavy use of the -f flag for emerge that fetches the packaged without installing during the night so that you don't have your connection held up during the day. As far as actually making the connection, I have no idea. _________________ An Evil Genious' Guide to Sheeple and How To Avoid Becoming One | 0x4C9EF4A |
