i installed the point release for quake 3, made a symlink to my pak0.pk3 on my windows partition, and tried to start it up. all i get is a black screen, which has a frozen cursor on it. i can't cntrl+alt+bs out of X or switch to a console, i have to manually restart my computer.
here's some info on my comp:
geforce 2 32MB
athlon 1.3ghz
256mb ram
i can run glxgears fine, so it's not a problem with GL (i think). i tried running "quake 3&>quake.log" but after it crashes and i reboot there is no quake.log. anyone know what's up? |

Two ideas:
* Do
Code: | quake3 > quake.log 2>&1 |
* As quake is initializing, flip over to a text console and see if that spares you a reboot.
I'm interested in how you fare because I'm about to try out the point release myself. |

i used that command and quickly switched to a console just in time to see my kernel dump garbage on the screen and crash . when i rebooted there was still no log file for quake. has anyone else had this problem? i would have thought with something common like a geforce 2 this would be easy to set up. |

If you're kernel is crashing you have other issues. One might be the NVIDIA kernel mods, the other might be the fancy patches in the Gentoo stock kernel. You might want to switch over to vanilla sources.
I'm using the point release with no problems on my ATI Radeon 7500 Mobile. |

Oh, another idea is that sound init may not be working. Try launching quake3 this way:
Code: | quake3 +set s_initsound 0 |
Perhaps the reason your kernel is crashing is because your AGP or NVIDIA DRM kernel module can't handle a console switch.
Don't redo the kernel until trying this. |

my system:
asus a7v333/amdXP2000+
geforce2 ti / linuxq3apoint-1.31.x86
gentoo 1.3 / linux 2.4.19 vanilla
I had absolutely no problems installing quake3 here, May I suggest running this command:
Code: | opengl-update nvidia |
sometimes this doesnt stick for me, so I have to run it again.. havnt figured out why yet... also you might want to upgrade to 2.4.19 vanilla because it contains fixes for amd proccesers and memory corruption, mabey the gentoo kenrel contains these fixes too, not sure tho..

Make sure you have current video and sound drivers, and try copying over the file completely, not just a sim link. Maybe it will make a difference. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.

If you're running KDE and have artsd active, then that's you problem... Kill artsd (or disable it from the control panel) and get fragging... |
