everytime I emerge a package I get a message that there were some files that needed updating so I did a etc-update and updated 9 files, and now I can't log on to my local network or access the internet. is there anything I can do to fix this?

You may want to try posting your question to the Installing Gentoo or General Gentoo forum, wish I could answer your question. Good luck on getting some help!

What do you mean "can't log on to your local network"? You can't log on to your gentoo box? Or you can't mount an NFS share/access a samba share, etc??

I got it to work again. seems that all I had to do was run dhcpcd.

Unless he somehow blasted /etc/conf.d/net while updating config files. I'm not sure how that would happen, mind you...

sorry guys I guess I didn't know exactly what was wrong, but after doing the etc-update everything else worked. I think that's what happend as michaelb said.
