Right now, everything I ever emerge comes from Oregon State U. This is, as far as I can tell, simply a default for Portage. I get pretty good download speeds, but I'd prefer to have something on the east coast of the US, that is raelly a good mirror for me.

How do I go about finding and adding mirrors to my Portage system?

Please take a look at the installation documentation.

Gentoo Installation Documentation wrote:
Selecting Mirrors (Optional)

mirrorselect is a tool designed to automatically pick the fastest mirrors based on your location, or manually pick a mirror from a list. Unfortunately, mirrorselect does not work well behind all routers.

Code listing 8.5: Using mirrorselect

(To select a mirror automatically:)
# mirrorselect -a -s4 -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
(To select a mirror interactively:)
# mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf

If for some reason mirrorselect fails you should be able to continue with this guide since no changes are made. One of the reasons why mirrorselect can fail is simply because it isn't there. mirrorselect isn't available from all installation media.

Furthermore you can pick a Gentoo Linux Mirror manually from that list and insert following line into your /etc/make.conf:

Code:
GENTOO_MIRRORS="server1 server2 [...]"

Have fun,
ian!
