How do I do ao file system check on my file systems? One is mounted at /, anohter at /home, and the last one is /var/mp3s. They are all 3 XFS.

I was looking at xfs_check, but after reading the man pages, I got confused. It says the file system should be in read-only or unmounted. If I unmount my root file system, then how am I going to use a tool that's in it? Second, if I make it read-only, how am I going to fix the problems if there are any?

First off, if you're using a journalling filesystem like XFS, there shouldn't be much of a need to do this, unless you are having problems, in which case you might want to look at xfs_repair.

Secondly, you can boot the system in single-user mode by adding "single" to the boot prompt. In this mode, you can mount the root filesystem read-only and make modifications to it if you want. Another way to do this is to boot from CD or another partition and then operate on your root partition.

Mounting something read-only means that you can't modify it through the normal Linux filesystem calls. Programs like fsck are still free to make changes to the low-level structures using raw access to the disk device, bypassing the filesystem layer altogether.

And it goes without saying, back up all important data before doing any of these things.

Is there a way to check if my file system is ok? I'm not really sure if there's something wrong with it or not, but I want to find out.

Boot up the Gentoo CD and run xfs_check on it.

Yeah.... I'm a winblows user.... those habits suck I know.... but at least I"m Windows free for the most part....

Been using Gentoo for bout a month and half. Used RedHat for a month before that. So glad to be Windows free on the desktop, but I don't know how much longer it will last. Oh well, thanks for all your help everyone.
