Hi people! I have been greatly enjoying Gentoo on my P-II 400 box. So much that I built a better system for Gentoo but now it will not boot.

I made system with A-Bit VP6 (SMP)

After booting Gentoo CD, I wget script from:
people.redhat.com/arjanv/pdcraid/MAKEDEV

and run it. It makes /dev/ataraid/d*p* devices. I then modprobe hptraid.

For fdisk, I fdisk /dev/ataraid/d0 and make:
/dev/ataraid/d0p1 type 83 (for /boot)
/dev/ataraid/d0p2 type 82 (for swap)
/dev/ataraid/d0p3 type 83 (for / )

I next mount these to /mnt/gentoo and /mnt/gentoo/root as in the instructions.

All install goes very well untill I come to GRUB..

Here I have no idea what to set root to.
I try root = (hd0,0) (my only offered choice)
and then setup (hd0). The system hangs here untill I press ctrl-c

I compiled hptraid and other goodies into the kernal (not as mods), but it seems that hptraid and the MAKEDEV script need to run -before- I can reach my boot disk.

I have searched here and other lists but can only seem to grok pieces of the answer.

Thank you for help getting past this.

Kim

Never mind. I have figured out how to run Gentoo with the hpt370 chip on the VP6. (raid 0)

Very nice but much pain in the buttocks.

For you who have same problems, I will write up notes on how to make this combination work. I need to write it all down before I forget.

its hardly worth the hassel unless your running dual boot with windblowz , but thats even more reason to go with lsr and lose M$ altogether 8O

run hdparm -Tt /dev/whatever it is.....with lsr raid 0 and ata drives ona promise controller i was getting 80mb/s disk reads and 290mb/s cache reads

hey rommel what's "lsr" ?

I'm running two 40gb barracuda drives on promise 20270 controller - and I get the same hdparm results as I do if they weren't in a raid 0 hardware array.. ??

You don't have to setup grub as described in the install docs, but do only create menu.lst (as described), skip the part of "setup (hd..)".

Make a grub bootdisc (described on the grub homepage). After that you complete the setup, boot from the grub bootdisc and perform the "setup (hd..)" actions as in the manual. This is how I got things working with RAID1 on a Promise controller.

Within Linux grub doesn't correctly recognises hd0 etc, so you have to run it from outside Linux (with the bootdisc).

lsr is linux software raid....it like the little promise and highpoint raid chips is software raid...the difference is the efficiency of lsr over the windows raid cards hacked to be linux compatable.

there a couple of good articles under the articles section from the from page of gentoo...drobbins wrote them and also links other howtos....you can set up from the begining of an install and its really pretty easy once you get to it.
