I have a chance at a SparkBook, and I wonder about the compatibility before I jump in. I've never even used one before, so it'll all be new to me. This on is supposed to be based on the ultra10, and I'll have complete specs Monday.

Sure they're expensive, but the one I'm getting is a used one that's being replaced. He called me, but I still haven't had a chance to look at it yet. It's got 512MB RAM, 10GB HDD, DVD-ROM, onboard ATI video and USB. I'm gonna see if it will boot the gentoo installer. If it will I figure the rest is all down hill.

Well, no-one's ever tried running linux on them afaik, and definitely not Gentoo. Your only hope is to send me a donation of one as quickly as possible.

I have GenToo on a sparcbook 3GX. I don't have the kernel config handy,
but as I recall, you need to treat the display as a CG6 and in the kernel, set
Code:

CONFIG_FB_P9100=y

Once you do that, for this system expect performance to be like that
of any Sparc5-110MHz system with 32MB memory: As long as you have
a large enough external disk, everything will build and install fine if you
wait long enough. But you will want to build your kernel first in order
to sort out the console issues. (This particular SparcBook is really just
an SS5 with a weird display driver chip. There is a thread discussing
Sparc-5 elsewhere on this forum.)

If you have a 3GX, try this, and ever figure out what the mouse device on
it looks like to Linux, please let me know. Except for that, it's not a bad
system.

If you have a SparcBook which is not an antique, you should ignore all
this and look at
Code:

CONFIG_TADPOLE_TS102_UCTRL=y

in the kernel, I suppose.

This is a long way of saying that for 3GX, everything is pretty straightforward
except for mouse support, and for all I know, the mouse might be simple,
too. I just don't see it. If you have another SparcBook, ignore this. :wink:

I should mention a warning: On a 3GX at least, a GenToo install
runs the CPU flat out for several days; and without adequate
ventillation, it will overheat.
