I set up this exact configuration, and it's working for me. Try:
Code:
# Options to call programs with
<SNIP>
OGGENCOPTS=-q5
<SNIP>

I don't think it is a good idea to convert your mp3's to ogg, you will always end up with lower quality music. It is better to let your current collection as is and from now on only create ogg's. abcde is great huh! I just moved to an other student home but before that I ripped all cd's of my former roommates using abcde. One of my favorite programs :)

You can use mp32ogg from http://faceprint.com/software.phtml
I use this myself and after the conversion I don't notice any quality degradation.

John Herdy.

The only reason that would make me convert my mp3 files into ogg is to promote the ogg format.

But... of course, if I convert from a lossy codec (mp3) into another lossy codec (ogg-vorbis), the resulting file can only sound worst than the original mp3, and the effect will be the opposite.

The last thing I want is to fuck ogg-vorbis reputation spreading bad-sounding converted from mp3 oggs. You're free to do that horrible thing but please, if you do convert any lossy encoded files into mp3, tag the files in some manner, write a "converted from mp3" comment tag inside them or something.

Why are you distributing your ogg/mp3 files anyway?
