I have just tried to install gentoo for the first time with the smallest .iso CD.

I have a 3c905 nic in the computer. The card works fine. I used it in a debian box earlier. And it looks like gentoo finds it with it's pci detection routine, and it loads the same driver as I used in the debian machine (3c95x). And when I try to run dhcpcd eth0 ... I get the "timed out .. " error. I have a win2k machine that runs a dhcp server. And the dhcp server works, because I have other machines on the same network that gets ip adresses from it.

When I run lsmod, It prints out 3c95x in the list ...

I have also tried to just ping the dhcp server ... network unreachable it says.

So ... why won't the gentoo box find the dhcp server?? Any tips?

I'm having a similar problem with the same card and getting an eth0 timeout at the same point during installation. I've just bought and setup a linksys router and have another box (mandrake 8.2) connected and running with no problem. On this box, I'm dual booting with XP, which has no problems. Only Gentoo is giving me trouble. I would really like to get Gentoo back up and running. I miss it.

Nice to see I am not the only one having problems. ;)

I have this win2k machine that has internet connection sharing on one of its network connections. Is it possible that the dhcp server is not a valid one for gentoo or anything? It worked for debian, so I guess it shold work for gentoo as well?

I'm baffled as well.

I borrowed a router and hub from a friend and everything worked fine. He needed them back, so I bought a router w/ 4-port switch. Only gentoo doesn't want to work, the other OSes work just fine. I assume if it was a dhcp server thing, the others wouldn't work either.

I'm at a total loss. :?

Is your NIC support a module or compiled into the kernel? Sometimes it can't be a module.

Hmm. What do you see when you type
Code:
# ifconfig -a
I'm wondering if there isn't some confusion as to what eth0 is. Do you have more than one NIC in this box?

It's not remarkable that you can't ping the DHCP server, since you don't have an IP address yet. No return addy, no ping. What sort of network environment are you in? Is the DHCP server yours? If so, does it filter by MAC address? Perhaps your DHCP server requires a hostname with the request. Try
Code:
# dhcpcd -h myhostname eth0
And see what that does.

Have you tried to give it a static address for the install.. If you give it a static address does an ifconfig show good, and can you ping the DHCP server at that point?

I have that NIC in my machine, but do not rely on it for install.. Have never tried to bring it up from 1.2 install CD. It definately works after the kernel is recompiled and rebooted (using as module)..

This is during install, so its a module. I actually have a netgear FA312, and it gets pci autodetected as natsemi. I have the same card in another machine and it works with my dsl router under gentoo (netgear rt314).

Not I :)

Didn't work for me. I'll post my ifconfig when I get home.

Didn't work for me, although I'm no expert at this stuff.

I'm gonna try this tonight, and I might also try downloading the beta gentoo install for shits and giggles. If all else fails I'll try debian, but I was looking forward to have a spiffy gentoo server to keep my gentoo desktop company :)

Thanks for all your help, I'm beginning to think this might be beyond my ability to solve, but if I get it working I'll make sure to post back. Any body else have any luck?

thats strange...i have this identical setup...i have a box with win2k that has ics enabled and runs an isa pcmcia host adapter and a wirless pcmcia card as well as a ethernet card that goes to a 5 line switch....gentoo and another sytem i have running freebsd are routed through the switch using dhcp and both work...i have setup gentoo several times on this network and its always connected (gentoo and freebsd both use the 3c905 based cards with the 3c59x module)

what version are you trying to install..i have not tried anything above 1.3a

Perhaps it could help too if someone's saying which version of the 3c905 is running. Don't forget: There are 4 different types of 3c905 NICs built from 3com. The early 3c905, then 3c905a,b and the c-series. I even had problems with a c-card in W2K 'cause it uses a slightly different driver as the b-type. So what about here?

Just an  ...

what happens if you try the static configuration?
load your network card and give it an IP..
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2
and then try to ping your gateway.. just follow the instructions or the installation guide...

whelp, I went ahead and used the gentoo 1.2 stage 2,3 tarball, and things worked like a charm, both dynamic and static :) I went ahead and compiled natsemi into the kernel, so I can't say what would have happened otherwise. Thanks for all the input, and although its probably best if it worked out of the box, this is workaround enough for me :)

rsync is purring along as we speak :)
