The title says it all. I have modules ieee1394, ohci1394, raw1394, and dv1394 installed (confirmed by 'cat /proc/modules').
When I plug in my digital camcorder and turn it on, the following appears in /var/log/syslog:
kernel: ieee1394: Device added: Node [00:1023] GUID[...] [Sony]
kernel: ieee1394: Node 00:1023 changed to 01:1023
ieee1394.agent[12943]: ... no drivers for IEEE1394 product 0x...
ieee1394: Node 01:1023 changed to 00:1023
ieee1394: Host removed: Node [00:1023] GUID[...] [Sony]
If I read this correctly, the kernel is picking up the device, trying to use the ieee1394 hotplugging, which cannot find information on the device and hence loads no drivers and deregisters the device.
I can tell that the device is NOT present, because if I try to run Kino, I get an error telling me that the ieee1394 subsystem is not loaded. (I know there is a thread on this error, which implies that changing the permissions on /dev/ieee1394 and /dev/video1394 will fix this, but not suprisingly, that has not worked for me since I don't think the device is considered present by the kernel).
I also know that the device works, because during my prior debian installation on this hardware I was able to use this camera with kino and dvgrab without trouble.
I also note that /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r8/modules.ieee1394map has NOTHING in it beyond the header line...which I assume explains why the hotplugging cannot find it.
Can anyone offer some advice?
Thanks.

Find the 'correct' hotplugging script, or modprobe it yourself after you plug the device in....
