ok,

I'm installing an a Penitumm 266MMX and it keeps getting to the same place and dies with the following error:
Code:

!!! ERROR:  The ebuild did not complete successfully
!!! ERROR: Function src_compile, Line 38, Exitcode 2

!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/sys-devel/binutils/binutils-2.11.92.0.12.3-r2.ebuild .
scripts/bootstrap.sh: line: 78 30632 segmentation fault         ermerge $myGLIBC $myBASELAYOUT $myTEXINFO $myGETTEXT $myBINUTILS $myGCC

I'm lost as to what this can be. Not sure if it's exactly the same error as last time, but it is was while doing binutils.[/code]

Are you using 686 binaries or anything 686 oriented?

I had segmentation faults too when trying to install gentoo on a low-end system. I'm not sure if it is possible to build Gentoo with less than 64Mb RAM, but it surely wouldn't build on my old pc with 48Mb =/... If you have little RAM, make sure you have a large swap partition (maybe not the best idea but worth a shot).

Ok to reply to both :

Pigeon:
Cxxflags="-mcpu=586 -03 -pipe"
I had it set to -march before, but thought I'd try -mcpu overnight. it died again, but without the segmentation fault.

ManuChao:
RAM should be ok, it's got 96Mb in it (Basically all the old SIMMs I could find!). Could be just the fact that it is a low-end (ie sub-PII) system.

Still confused :(
