hi,
i just got starcraft running on my gentoo. (tipp don't use the gentoo kernel for wine, just use the vanilla and the game runs fast).

now i try to get fullscreen working. i found the command
xinit /usr/wine/bin/wine ./StarCraft.exe -- /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 -xf86config conf

with conf as my new XF86config file with Modes set to 640x480 and Depth set to 8. i get a grey screen with mouse, but there is now starcraft. killing the screen with STRG+ALT+BACK i get the following error messages

-----------cut---------------
(++) Using config file: "/etc/X11/conf"
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .

i also changed the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers to

------------cut----------------
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X
:1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X
------------cut----------------

but nothing changed.

Out of curiosity... Why does the vanilla kernel work better than the gentoo "optimized" kernel?

I do pretty much the same thing to start starcraft. But I use :2 instead of :1. Is X already running? Because if so that would be the reason for the connection being refused.

Here is the line I use:
xinit /usr/local/bin/sc -- :2 -xf86config XF86Config-SC

/usr/local/bin/sc is just a script that I use to start starcraft. Hopefully some of this helps.... Again I think the problem could be if X is already running and you are using :1, not sure though but worth a try. Good luck.

Is that why Half-Life runs so damn slowly?

yep, try changing from kernel 2.4.19-gentoo to 2.4.19-vanilla.
for me everything works fine and starcraft now rocks :-)

I think the Gentoo kernel for some reason or another just doesn't seem as tested as teh Vanilla kernel.

I think some of the patches that are applied may have negative performance penalties, but I am just guessing :)

why are you guys running it in it's own x server , I can run starcraft sweet as by just turning off running in a managed window in the winex config ..is there any performance gain ????as it is very playable running unmanaged with a pretty much standard config in winex ......

about the gentoo/vanilla thing , has any compared the kernels as it doesnt appear to be related to the preempt patch or low-latancy scheduling as I ve seen a few bits and pieces on both the forums here and at transgaming and the game seems to run fine on the vanilla kernel with both patches applied but wont run nice on the gentoo once with or without the patches enabled.....

Cheers
Dale.
