I'm not sure if this is a problem caused by emerge -u world or other issues since I rarly reboot my computer. Lots of things have been done since last reboot.

The problem appeared when I tried to do a reboot (from KDE). X stopped, but instead of a reboot I got the console login prompt. I logged in and tried to do a 'shutdown -h now', but the command was not found. I searched for it without luck so I did a "hard" reboot.

After the computer starts, the kernel is loaded and the root partition is mounted read-only. None of the start-up scripts are run and I'm presented with a bash "init-x$" (where x is a version number).

I've searched for init, reboot, shutdown and a few other programs I believe come from the same package without finding any.

I think this is caused by a failed installation of a package, but I'm not sure how I can fix this without a complete reinstallation.

Can someone help me?

Regards,
Franki

shutdown is located under /sbin/shutdown and that path is likely not in your users profile. root should be able to run shutdown.

Do you have /etc/inittab still intact (or a /etc/._cfg0000_inittab you can move to /etc/inittab)? And /sbin/init? You can extract these from the stage2 tarball and put them in the correct place if they are missing. Hopefully, this will get you back to the stage where you can reboot to a reasonable system (it might be an idea to remove the xdm symlink from /etc/runlevels/default first, for now) and then run emerge baselayout to correct the problem properly.

Thanks ebichu!

You solved my problem. It seems like baselayout somehow where completely uninstalled. I have not done that intentially, so it might be a bug in protage or the frontend I'm using, Kportagemaster.

Here is what I did:

I booted the install-CD, mounted the root partition and chroot'ed it. Tried to emerge baselayout, but /sbin/functions.sh where missing. I copied the file from the stage2 tarball, and where able to do the emerge. After that gentoo behaves like it used to.
