Hi guys

I got a little big problem.
Some time ago I installed Gentoo on my box... Everythings runs quite good, but I can't switch user with "su" and "su -". I added my normal user to the group wheel, as it is written in the FAQ. So, what else can I do?

Bye

may be too simple, but have you tried logging out and back in again as your user? You need to do this to update the group membership (only way I know how, anyway). Type 'groups <username>' to confirm.

Is there a difference between logging out and in again and rebooting the computer several times after changing the group? 'Cause I did it the 2nd way.

nah, second way should pretty much cover it. Hmm... what exactly is the error when you try to su? Just 'Permission denied'? Run that groups command just to be sure you're in the group. Maybe you made a type in /etc/group? I've done that several times...

you could always use sudo... just put sudo in front of any command and it'll run it as root, plus you can set /etc/sudoers so it won't promt you for a password each time

Do you have kerberos or kth installed? They come with their own su in /usr/athena/bin or /bin/athena. I was shocked to find it.

You want the su in /usr/bin or /bin.

(This is but one possibility, one that I encounered ... you should also try "man suauth" and read about configuring the real su.)

Sorry, I wasn't in wheel's group... I'm used to Conectiva and Red Hat, they don't need it...
