What version of portage are you running?
Code:
emerge --version
will tell you.

You are running an old version of portage. That might be the problem. Try to do an 'emerge portage'

Maybe u have somehow corrupted xfree tarballs, remove them, they are in /usr/portage/distfiles ( i think), and run emerge xfree again.

Did 'emerge -u portage' also fail?

Have you emerge anything so far?
Is it fresh install?
Did you already install and reboot system?
Run command df and paste the output.
Run command rm -r /tmp/*

Typically when emerge has had problems with a 1.9x version of portage, upgrading portage is the solution. I'm not sure how else to get around that at this point. I will search again in the morning.

Do you have any sandbox files in /tmp?

"Sandboxing" locks an ebuild into a specific directory to ensure nothing is installed or accessed outside of it; this is a great feature of Portage. However, some less-than-intelligent configure scripts (such as this one) attempt to break out of the sandbox (/dev/mem). Most of these are caught and patched before release, but this one got by.

That was the best I could find. Quoted from this thread.

In any case, removing sandbox files from /tmp has solved problems from time to time.

Hi Jammen

I just put a link here to your bug report, maybe it helps someone to see your problem more clearly.
